Newton, AL – Pursuit Ends in Crash with Injuries on Lee Boy Rd and Deal Rd

Newton, AL (October 17, 2024) – A high-speed police pursuit in Newton led to a crash involving multiple law enforcement agencies on Tuesday night. The chase began at approximately 9:16 PM when Newton Police notified Ozark-Dale County 911 of a pursuit involving a white Chevrolet Impala, reported to belong to a rental agency out of Mobile.

As the chase progressed, the suspect vehicle was observed speeding past John Hutto Park at approximately 90 miles per hour. By 9:17 PM, the vehicle was heading towards Lonnie Watson Road, with law enforcement from Dale County Sheriff’s Office and Pinckard Police responding to the scene.

At 9:21 PM, the suspect vehicle was traveling westbound on Highway 84 towards Daleville, reaching speeds of 103 miles per hour. Shortly after, at 9:22 PM, the suspect turned around and headed east on Highway 84 back into Houston County, prompting a response from Houston County Sheriff’s Deputies.

The pursuit escalated as the suspect vehicle continued eastbound, crossing Highway 123 at speeds reported to be 115 miles per hour. At 9:25 PM, the suspect turned left onto Lee Boy Road, with Newton Police still in pursuit, supported by Pinckard Police, Dale County Sheriff’s Deputies, ALEA Troopers, and Houston County Sheriff’s Deputies.

The situation took a dangerous turn at 9:27 PM when Newton Police reported that the suspect had crashed at the intersection of Lee Boy Road and Deal Road, resulting in injuries. Multiple law enforcement units were dispatched to assist the Newton officer at the scene.

By 9:32 PM, Dale County Sheriff Mason Bynum joined the response. Wicksburg Fire-Rescue also arrived to assist, as a Dale County Sheriff Tahoe that had been rear-ended was reported to be attempting to catch fire. Officers quickly used fire extinguishers to extinguish the flames.

Two suspects were taken into custody following the crash. By 9:57 PM, Wicksburg Rescue had transported the Newton Police Officer to Flowers Hospital for non-emergency medical care, while several law enforcement officers remained on the scene to manage the aftermath of the incident.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) has taken charge of the investigation into the crash.
