Gloverville, SC (October 1, 2024) – A tragic house fire early Sunday morning claimed the life of an elderly woman in Aiken County. Joyce Barfield, 78, was pronounced dead in her home just before 6 a.m., as reported by the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.

Fire crews responded to an active structure fire at Barfield’s residence located on the 100 block of School Street. Upon arrival, they found the home engulfed in flames. The coroner’s office later confirmed that Barfield was found inside the home. It is believed that the fire ignited in a bedroom, though the exact cause remains under investigation.

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, along with the coroner’s office, is currently looking into the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
