Tucson, AZ – Fatal Crash on West Ajo Way

Tucson, AZ (October 22, 2024) – A devastating accident occurred Monday afternoon along West Ajo Way in southwest Tucson, resulting in the tragic deaths of five individuals. The Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) is currently investigating the incident, which took place at approximately 4:42 p.m. west of Camino Verde.

According to reports, the crash involved two vehicles, including a Toyota passenger car that was traveling west on Ajo Way. The driver of the Toyota failed to stop at a red light at San Joaquin Road, leading to a collision with the left side of a Nissan SUV. The impact caused the SUV to veer into the median, where it subsequently burst into flames.

Tragically, all five occupants of the Nissan SUV lost their lives at the scene of the crash. The driver of the Toyota was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Witnesses reported that the Toyota was observed driving recklessly prior to the collision, and authorities suspect impairment may have played a role in the incident.

Dashcam footage obtained by 13 News from an anonymous viewer captured the moments surrounding the crash, showing black smoke rising from the burning vehicle trapped in the median. Eyewitness Sean Gueffry recounted his experience during the incident, stating that he attempted to rescue individuals from the SUV but was unable to save them. “I brought her to the side and told her to sit down, and I realized the other car was on fire,” Gueffry explained. “Me and two other individuals tried to bust the windows and pull the family out. We were able to bust out the windows, but we were too late.”
