Great Falls, MT – Fatal Crash on US Hwy 191 near MM 52

Great Falls, MT (October 21, 2024) – A tragic two-vehicle crash occurred in Gallatin County on Sunday evening, resulting in one fatality and another individual injured. The Montana Highway Patrol (MHP) reported that the incident took place around 7:50 PM near mile marker 52 of US Highway 191, several miles northeast of Big Sky.

The collision involved a Nissan Titan pickup truck driven by a 31-year-old man from Big Sky and a Peterbilt semi truck operated by a 28-year-old man from Utah. According to the MHP report, the Nissan was traveling northbound when the driver lost control of the vehicle, crossing the center line and entering the southbound lane. Upon crossing, the Nissan struck a guardrail and came to a stop.

The southbound semi truck subsequently collided with the Nissan. Tragically, the driver of the Nissan was pronounced dead at the scene; however, his name has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin. The MHP has not confirmed whether he was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The driver of the semi truck was transported to Big Sky Medical Center for treatment, although the nature and extent of his injuries have not been disclosed. It was noted that he was wearing a seatbelt during the incident.

According to the MHP, preliminary investigations suggest that alcohol and speed may have contributed to the collision.
