Hammond, LA – Pedestrian Killed in Crash on US Hwy 51 at Kohnke Hill Rd

Hammond, LA (October 20, 2024) – A tragic incident occurred on October 18, 2024, at approximately 8:10 p.m., involving a pedestrian on US Highway 51 at Kohnke Hill Road in Tangipahoa Parish. The crash resulted in the death of 81-year-old Charles Baglio Jr. of Independence.

Preliminary investigations by Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop L revealed that two separate crashes took place just minutes apart in the same vicinity. The first crash involved a 2025 Nissan Altima, driven by Baglio, who was traveling eastbound on Kohnke Hill Road toward US Hwy 51. At the same time, a 2016 Nissan Altima was traveling southbound on US Hwy 51 towards Kohnke Hill Road. It appears that Baglio entered the intersection of US Hwy 51, placing his vehicle in the path of the southbound 2016 Nissan. The resulting collision caused Baglio’s 2025 Nissan to come to rest partially across both lanes of US Hwy 51, while the 2016 Nissan exited the roadway and ended up in the northbound ditch.

Following the initial crash and before emergency personnel could arrive, Baglio exited his vehicle to check on the driver of the 2016 Nissan in the ditch. Tragically, as he walked back to his vehicle, he re-entered the roadway and was struck by a 2001 Toyota Tundra traveling southbound on US Hwy 51. The impact resulted in fatal injuries for Baglio, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Toyota, who was unrestrained, was unharmed. Authorities reported that impairment is not suspected for the Toyota driver, who provided a breath sample of .000g%. A routine toxicology sample was obtained from Baglio for further analysis as part of the ongoing investigation.
