Kula, HI (October 20, 2024) – A tragic motor vehicle collision occurred on Haleakala Highway (Highway 378) at approximately 2:30 p.m. on October 18, resulting in the death of a bicyclist. The incident took place 0.9 miles south of Mile Marker #6, prompting an immediate response from local authorities.

Preliminary investigations indicate that a 68-year-old male bicyclist was riding with a Maui Downhill group when he crossed the yellow double-solid lane markings into the oncoming lane. Unfortunately, this maneuver led to a collision with a vehicle traveling uphill on Haleakala Highway. The bicyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, but despite this precaution, he sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the collision stopped immediately and remained at the scene to cooperate with law enforcement. Fortunately, both the driver and passenger in the vehicle were not injured as a result of the accident.
