Mamakating, NY – Fatal Collision Involving Tractor-Trailer on Route 17 West

Mamakating, NY (October 22, 2024) – State Police have reported a tragic accident that occurred on Monday, October 21, resulting in the deaths of two individuals after their vehicle collided with a tractor-trailer. The incident took place at approximately 11:55 a.m. on Route 17 West, near Exit 12, in Sullivan County.

According to Trooper Steven Nevel, preliminary investigations indicate that a 2015 Dodge was traveling westbound on Route 17 when it struck the rear of a 2010 Peterbilt tractor-trailer that was also traveling in the same direction. The impact of the collision was severe, leading to significant consequences for those involved.

The driver of the Dodge, identified as 29-year-old Joseph Wallace from Woodbourne, and his front seat passenger, 38-year-old Sharon Ackerman McGriff from Monticello, were both extricated from the vehicle. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived on the scene and performed life-saving measures; however, both victims ultimately succumbed to their injuries.

A third passenger, 34-year-old Edward McGriff, also from Monticello, was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla with serious injuries. Fortunately, he is reported to be in stable condition.

The incident has resulted in the closure of the roadway for several hours as authorities conducted their investigation. The State Police are actively looking into the circumstances surrounding the crash to determine the factors that contributed to this tragic event.
