Presque Isle, ME – Motorcycle and Electric Bike Crash with Injuries on Market St

Presque Isle, ME (October 3, 2024) – A serious accident occurred on Thursday, October 3 at approximately 10:10 a.m. involving a motor vehicle and an electric bike on Market Street in Fort Kent. The Fort Kent Police Department responded to the scene, along with Fort Kent Fire and Rescue, to provide aid to the operator of the electric bike.

The operator of the bike, identified as 65-year-old Lonnie Charette of Fort Kent, was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. He sustained serious injuries and was transported to Northern Maine Medical Center, where he is currently listed in critical condition.

The driver of the other vehicle, a gray 2017 Dodge Caravan, was identified as 37-year-old Ian Bourgoin of St. Francis. Bourgoin was the lone occupant of the vehicle and fortunately sustained no injuries from the incident.

According to witness interviews and preliminary investigations, Charette was traveling southbound on Market Street when Bourgoin entered the roadway from West Market Street. Bourgoin attempted to merge into traffic heading northbound but turned directly in front of Charette. In an effort to avoid the collision, Charette dumped the bike but slid into Bourgoin’s vehicle.

The van had been stopped at the intersection of West Market Street and Market Street before pulling out in front of the bike, which was traveling southbound. The van’s maneuver to merge into the flow of traffic led to the unfortunate accident.

Market Street was temporarily closed during the investigation, and alternate routes were established to bypass the crash scene. As of now, there are no notable contributing factors reported, and the crash remains under investigation.
