Purlear, NC – Fatal Dirt Bike Crash on Shingle Gap Rd

Purlear, NC (September 29, 2024) – A tragic dirt bike accident occurred early Saturday morning in Wilkes County, resulting in the deaths of both drivers involved. At approximately midnight, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) responded to the scene of the crash on Shingle Gap Road near CC Hayes Road.

Preliminary reports indicate that a Honda dirt bike, traveling north on Shingle Gap Road, collided head-on with a southbound Suzuki dirt bike in the center of the roadway. The impact was severe, leading to the immediate deaths of both riders.

Matthew Dean Blankenship, 21, of Ferguson, was the driver of the Honda and was pronounced dead at the scene. Orin Thomas Harless, 30, of Purlear, was the driver of the Suzuki and also succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The NCSHP’s initial investigation revealed that neither speed nor impairment was a factor in the crash. However, it was noted that both drivers allegedly were not wearing helmets at the time of the accident.
